VetAgens started with a question that wouldn’t leave us alone: Why do we know so much about extending human lifespan, yet so little about maximizing the healthspan of the dogs who share our lives?

Groundbreaking research in canine geroscience is happening right now, in university laboratories, veterinary clinical trials, and peer-reviewed journals. But most dog owners will never read these papers. The gap isn’t in the science itself — it’s in translating that science into clinical practice and everyday decisions.

That’s exactly why VetAgens exists.

What We Do

We read the dense academic studies so you don’t have to. We analyze and translate complex findings from fields like canine geroscience, metabolic health, the canine microbiome, and comparative oncology into clear, actionable language.

Our goal is to help you make informed, evidence-based decisions for your dog’s healthspan today — not ten years from now, once the findings finally trickle down to mainstream pet media.

How Our Content Is Produced

VetAgens content is now produced with direct input from practicing veterinarians.

Our articles are written by Dr. Canip Gürcan, DVM (Pet Hekim Veterinary Clinic). Our contributor team will expand over time to include other veterinarians from Pet Hekim Veterinary Clinic as well as academics from various universities; each new contributor will be introduced here by name and credentials as they join.

The editorial process for these clinical articles is led by Faruk Karaman. With a background in systems architecture, data analysis, and information translation, Faruk serves as editor, checking source integrity, readability, and the accuracy of scientific references in the content our veterinarians write.

To be transparent about one thing: VetAgens is not an official service page of Pet Hekim Veterinary Clinic, and it has no direct connection to the clinic’s treatment or appointment processes. VetAgens is an independent science communication platform — our contributing veterinarians share articles here, drawing on their own clinical experience, strictly for informational and educational purposes.

Our Editorial Principles

🔬 Source First (Data Integrity): Every claim, statistic, and biological mechanism we discuss is grounded in primary literature, peer-reviewed journals, or registered clinical trials (with DOI citations). No guesswork, and no sponsored opinion dressed up as science.

🐾 Dog First (Biological Healthspan): We write for dog owners who want objective, evidence-based truths about canine aging, even when the science is complex or counterintuitive.

📖 Clarity First (Accessible Science): Cellular aging and computational biology are inherently complex topics. We work to make them approachable without stripping away the statistical nuance that gives the data its meaning.

Why Canine Longevity Science Matters

Dogs aren’t just pets — they’re family members facing a difficult biological reality: they age roughly seven times faster than humans. A dog’s entire life journey, from puppyhood to seniority, unfolds within a single decade.

Modern biotechnology now treats aging not as an inevitable countdown, but as a complex, malleable process shaped by genetics, metagenomic health, diet, environmental stressors, and targeted longevity interventions. For example:

  • The TRIAD Study is actively testing the cellular longevity effects of rapamycin in companion dogs.

Science is dynamic. We continuously update our published content as new clinical trial data emerges, and we welcome technical corrections and peer review from veterinary pathologists, biostatisticians, and researchers.

What VetAgens Is Not
